Reinhard and Yang debating over politics

I love the character parallels and rivalry between these two so much. The fact that this is the only time they met each other yet the clash of their ideologies is so engaging to see and that makes their dynamic more unique than other anime rivalries.

I love how both of them are being respectful with Yang Wenli even addressed Reinhard as "Your Excellency" just like two men discussing about politics despite being rival to each other and actively trying to kill each other on the battlefield.

It was one of those rare time when Yang Wen Li actually find someone of a higher rank who is willing to understand about his perspective and he turns out to be the Kaiser of the enemy.

Strange, despite being the two protagonists (or deuteragonists), this is the only time of all anime they meet face-to-face

Two fantastic characters.

Its funny because some guys complain that they can't get into old Logth bacause of the animation, but for me old ova makes these characters look more graceful.

Before the characters of Classroom of the Elite, Game of Thrones, Death Note and Code Geass we had these two. 🥹

One question for Yang, is that a Republican democracy is superior to autocracy because it’s the right of the people to destroy themselves, who are the “people”? The majority, those in power in a Republican government, the Party? And don’t people blame people other then themselves for the failures of a republic like so many in the United States, how’s that different from an autocracy in that since?

Fundamentally, Yang is an academic and a scholar, NOT a soldier.
Reinhard getting all hot n bothered from a simple debate highlights this contrast quite well.

But, this is the problem with debate… ppl get too emotionally invested to the point of feeling any criticism is a personal attack, even though that's rarely ever the point.

Meanwhile modern day anime is about some angsty teenager given god-like power and killing everyone for "freedom"

ヤンはとても魅力的なキャラクターだが、彼は民主政について最も大事な事に言及していない。専制君主や共和制独裁者を倒すには、武力革命しか無いのだ。しかし民主主義の真骨頂は、血を流さずに権力者を引きずり下ろせる事にある。

彼がこのような重要な場面でそれを語らないのは、不自然と言わざるを得ない。
